Chapter 2: An Unexpected Departure

So, life has done some weird things at me these past few months and I’m looking at a new direction to take.

What this means for you is that I have sadly outgrown this blog of mine and am looking at new ways to touch base with the world.

Rather than, as possibly suspected by some, simply disappearing off the world, I feel that I owe the courtesy of a formal farewell.

It’s been fun (for me, anyway) and insightful (again, mainly for me!) and often weird. I just hope you all keep following me (@PaulHeeleyMusic / Facebook) and I wish you all bon chance pour l’avenir (good luck for non-French speakers)

Hugs / Brofists / Brohooves (yes, I am) all round.

Anime. Not Just For Perverts

When some of you hear the word anime, I would guess you see tentacles and schoolgirls. Some of you just see the schoolgirls… Often with ‘fan service’ (or panty shots).

You are all hentai. Note that I did not say thinking of hentai. That’s like saying thinking of perverts; grammatically bizarre and garden variety bizarre as a concept.

For those of you who perhaps saw a post apocalyptic Tokyo or animal cruelty (think about it…), or maybe bizarre fantasy worlds with Disney distribution, you are perhaps mainstream, but on a better track.

I have a bit of a thing for CLAMP’s body of work, primarily Chobits and CardCaptor Sakura as of late. Granted, the humour in Chobits is mildly ‘ecchi’, but the actual story had more heart than a lot of live action films or series. I’m not going to ruin it in case you hunt it out, but I shed real tears at the end. As well as laughing so hard at times. You can find the series here, or the complete manga over two omnibus volumes from a wide variety of sources.

As for Sakura, not only does it have something that western TV has to make big events over (pansexual relationships), but again lots of humour and heart. And again, infant-esque levels of weeping in places. Take episode 16, ‘Sakura and the Rainbow of Memories’. I will not give away any plot, but just say that no cards were captured during the episode and I think the ending ranks as one of my top emotional moments of any entertainment type. Please hunt it down and enjoy.

Sorry this is a long one, but I thought of this a few weeks ago and have dwelt on it to insane levels. I just hope that those of you who see animation as just another way of storytelling agree with me. Those of you who didn’t before, I hope you may reconsider and give it a chance.

Just… Wow…

So, as well as this song by theJellybottys made famous by Alan Davies on QI, I have just found out about this wonderful venue.

Think I need to plan a day trip to Whitstable soon!

Musical Interlude

Still recording, but I thought I’d post the first five for you here.

Not perfect, but should give you a rough idea of what my brain is throwing out.

Feel free to leave a comment with your thoughts 🙂

Not the book / film (which are really rather good), but the concept.

It’s been some time since I looked at ‘life stuff’ here, but it has been on my mind.

Humans are amazing creatures, by and large, and we do some pretty cool things. Sometimes, we are… well… unabashedly ‘human’ and make mistakes. The majority of us feel a sense of guilt and aim to right the wrong and feel positive when karma is back in equilibrium.

Occasionally, we do something massive and can’t seem to right it. This doesn’t mean that the issue hasn’t been dealt with. Usually, this is in our heads, even if the wronged party has accepted that all has been done to address it.

For some, like me, this can lead to a general sense of baggage. We carry these issues with us and consider all of the pursuant actions of our lives in response to the offending act.

Until recently, I thought that I was in a spiral of being dangled the atonement carrot and having it snatched away. This seems to have finally balanced out and I feel that I am now being given the opportunity to move forward and make a life without the pains of previous errors weighing me down.

The real question is whether this is some cosmic scale being balanced or just a personal sense of positive feeling. I would consider both, due to being a logical and spiritual kinda guy, so I feel positive because of the balancing.

This is all personal, however, and I am not stating that everyone should subscribe to my theory. I just offer my views and leave the rest to you.

I will leave you with some wise words, though. We all have good days and bad days and every single thing we do is based on our thoughts and abilities at that time. As long as we do the best we can with these, it has not been for naught.

The Two Towers Remixed

You may recall I posted this a few weeks back. Well, Chetreo has done it again:

Again, I should hate this as the funeral song performed by Eowyn is rather moving and any ‘tampering’ would be wrong…

But again, I have been convinced otherwise. I mean it entirely when I say that this had me on the verge of tears.

Can’t wait for the Return of the King one…

Drummer Wanted!

As much as I dislike abuse of blogs in this way, I need to put this out there.

No Redemption and Thornleaf need a drummer to fill a gap left due to differences.

Will need to have own transport and kit (obviously!) and be local to the band, so Stoke-on-Trent area. Sorry, international fans 🙂

You can contact me on facebook or twitter, or drop a message on the pages linked above.

If you’re not a master of the sticks, please pass this on to someone you know if you think they can fill the slot.

Thank you in advance.

Well, got a fair handle on the recording thing. Even using midi orchestrations.

Some has been frustrating (what interface device? That one there? Can’t see it…), some has been a breeze, but all of it has been worthwhile.

Still, have to admit that my voice has given up for today, at least. However, there are still some hours to make noise in.

More to come soon and maybe even a preview of one or two of them.

Sacrilegious, Precious, But We Likes It

I should detest this, but I’m actually loving it in a weird way. Watch for yourselves:

I was seconds from running away into a corner when the refrain came on (you shall not pass, etc). Something about the way it is mixed together just struck me. When I first found it here, I did not expect to come away humming it.

You can find the creator Chetreo’s channel here.

Musical Motivation

As you may have noticed if you have eyes, the name of this blog contains the word ‘music’. And regular visitors will know I tend to do a bit of this making notes and words thing.

It may have been a bit quiet on this front and I apologise profusely. However, I have sat today and gone through a number of recordings on my phone and realised the potential for some of my best work ever.

I hope to do some kind of video performance for some of them to let you know what is in my head and heart and upload when I can.

Although, gotten quite worried about three of them. One reminds me of Goblin, the Italian prog band best known for Dario Argento film soundtracks and is my first real instrumental piece.

Then we have my homage to Canadian Devin Townsend (facebook / twitter), involving strange lyrics, vocal weirdness and some bizarre riffs. Purely unintentional, but I had been listening to Deconstruction a lot at the time of writing.

And then ‘Waters’, my 70’s folk moment. I never expected this to happen, but it fulfills some strange creature in my soul and thus I’m happy. Also, managing to really use the lower end of my range to full effect before opening up as it goes on. I think this is my proudest achievement since this one.

More news to come, so stay tuned.
